I have really been captivated by these Kings of the mangroves. My first attempt was achieved in night conditions where the bird was far away and I had to use a flash and my friend's "Bigma" 50-500mm to get a shot. That picture was posted previously and the feedback was very positive.

So I was encouraged to try and better this. I went to the water village (my second home now) after work and the evening light was pretty good. However. today I did not have the "bigma" lens and had only my trusty 70-300mm ED f/4.5-5.6 VR with me.

As soon as I setup my camera settings, I went searching for the Kings. Suddenly I heard their call and one of them flew passed me and settled on a low lying shrub above the marshy inlet. I slowly approached it and Alas it was off again- to another shrub further in until it felt safe I guess. But to my luck it was in a good position where the light was relatively strong and showed up its lovely feathers. I did not waste anytime and took the shot in Shutter priority mode at 1/160 of second-relying on my steadiest stance and VR to help dampen any camera shake, hoping he/she won't move. I was happy with the end result but I knew I was going to crop it, and that was why I left the ISO at 200. I still had some grain after the crop, so I ran it through neat image to sharpen and filter the image. Then saved, resized and uploaded for TL.I can see why bird photography is addictive and expensive as you really need at least 800mm to really fill the frame when you chase after these small birds! But the other option is to be patient and improve your approach-easier said than done!

Any comments, critiques, and suggestions welcome.....and hope everyone is having a great day!

Regards,

Dilshan

Great closeup capture of the lovely bird with superb colors!
The blurry BG gives great contrast to the bright colored bird. The sharpness and POV are well chosen with greatly managed DOF.

Hi Dilshan
You did a fantastic job of getting this shot with the lens.
I never seem to be lucky at getting birds unless I am really hidden.
The bird is tack shark, has gorgeous color and feather details and good eye reflection. Its a real beauty.
Dot

Hello Dilshan,
wow, this bird is fantastic.
You made a wonderful sharp shot, I like it very much.
Kingfishers are very rare here in Germany - I never managed to make a shot of this shy bird.
So thanks for yours, I like it very much, greetings

Hi, Dilshan.A very good photograph of the King Fisher indeed with a good point of view, depth of field and soft lighting. I congratulate you on a excellent choice of the subject. Your choice of POV also goes along with the subject. The composition and the colors are very good. Cheers.
