This is the ruins of the Downhill Castle sited at the coast near Castlerock in Northern Ireland . This is the former property of the eccentric and very rich Anglican Bishop of Derry who was also the earl of Bristol , it was built in 1722 , it was burned down in 1851 , rebuilt in 1870 and abandomned after world war two.The roof was taken down for its scrap value and the remains of the small castellated building now stand forlornly in a field .Taken during a trip to the area in Aug-Sept 98 with my old Minolta.
PP from a print .
Converted to B&W , cropped at the bottom to a more panoramic format, curves, sharpened , not much else ..
Thanks for reviewing this photo,
Carol

Your details are very nice in this Carol! BW is a good choice here, but I am having visions of an HDR that would be amazing with the sky etc. Super sharp! Well done!

Hello Carol,
These splendid ruins of the castle. I had the opportunity to visit and me north coast of Ireland but we have not had time and castles.
Maybe you come back someday.
Propose a splendid shot, congratulations.
Have a pleasant evening,
Adrian

Hi Carol,
I like the mood in this picture, but I find the composition too grey and with too much grass IMO. An other version in WS : tell me what you think about it !
TFS
Kind regards
Jean

Boa noite Carol
I would love to had taken photos in the past. It must be really good to look this photo and believe more than 10 years a go I did a good work.
I feel that to crop the grass we miss the image from the place, the fantastic huge green that keep from years and years these strong mood ruins.
I like very much the way you get the mood.
Um abraço
teresa

Hi Carol
Wonderful sharpness, compo, light and contrast, with a great b/w presentation and an excellent composition
Great mood.
Best regards, mb

Hi Carol,
very nice shot, I liked the grey tones and clarity, as well as the sharp focus. Nice building, maybe another interesting shot would be very close, looking up with a wide angle lens, should be an imposing image.
great job, see you around
Robert

Hi Carol..nice shot...good tonal range with nice details.

Roger

Sorry Carol : doesn't work for me :
all of cours IMO !!

1) compo
I miss drama, tragedy or a special view.
In contrast of other photos you took, this is a " recording "
( hope this is English )
It's a stripped down castle !
Show its " loneliness "
Shoot it with more surrouding, space ( if possible )
wide angle or further away
or
get closer and pick " a block " that tells the story " everybody has left here "

2)
Overall to gray. Pump up the contrast.
This is a black-an-white ... I didn't find black nor white
give that histogram a push :-)

Don't think " Jan has a different view "
Nope ...
I give you the same remarks that I get on my B/W photos at the academy.
But it seems, for me, easyer to see others " mistakes "
than my own ...
We have a saying " de beste stuurlui staan aan wal "
hmm ... my best shot :
" the best sailors ( captains ) you'll find at the quay side "
:-)

Greetings
Jan
