Ok, first off I know that this is a crap picture, thats part of the point really. What this shows is the difference in lighting between no flash, a sigma EF500 flash and the sigma flash but with a flash extender attached. As you can see the light available is vastly different.

By all means comment on the usefulness of this experiment, hwo I could have done it better or my conclusions, but please please please don't comment on the quality of the picture itself!!!!

Technicalities of the picture -

* Camera about 15 metres away from the subject (50 feet, give or take)
* Focal length of the lens 417mm
* ISO200 used (I could have chosen a higher ISO, but yet again, thats not the point of the picture)
* Camera set up on a sturdy tripod
* All shots taken with exactly the same aperture and exposure time
* 1/25s chosen because thats what I felt like - absolutely nothing technical about that choice!
* early evening chosen - normally I'd have put my camera away by this time for shooting outside.

The concept of the flash extender is exactly the same as that behind lighthouses - use a fresnel lens to amplify the light. The extender is extremely lightweight (as the lens is flexible plastic).

So what's my conclusion? The extender is a really nice piece of kit - simple to use and likely to extend my own shooting options, giving the chance to take pictures later into the evenings or on more overcast days. No really suitable for any focal length under 300mm, but for wildlife photography I think its got potential.

Hi Mark,
Indeed a crap picture (it are your own words :-) But I'm happy you show here on TL the different exposures with(out) flash and settings. Great idea well presented. The note is perfect too.

Hola amigo,
original ilustración y presentación.
buena información,
saludos Mark

Nice to show this experiment.
Looks like the extender works.

Mark, Mark, oh did you kill that poor frail creature to get it to stay still? Such eloquence in death, such shortness of life! LOL. Now you know that by telling us not to comment, we would have to...;)

Thanks, I rate this as a top-notch example quite honestly and it has convinced me that there's value in the Fresnel setup for wildlife. That's all I wanted from the post and that's what I got. Excellent site support and teaching us some good little tidbits to improve our own craft.

Since I may get one, you should file for a commission...;)

TFS, Mark. This is a critique more of the idea and purpose rather than the shot, OF COURSE!

Just seen this, Mark - TL is, or should be, about learning and this is certainly educational. Image quality secondary here, combined with the note it's an instructive triptych and ideal for TL. Deserves more recognition in my view - and I wish more TL postings were so instructive.

Hi mark, great piece of information, very well presented & very helpful.I also wonder how the three images combined in HDR would help the appearance of the subject:)

Bonjour Mark,

This is exactly the kind of "picture" I was expecting to see.
I was wondering how it would come up after reading the thread on the forum, and I find the result more than instructive.
What I would like to have now is some tips on how to focus correctly with such a distance!

Finally, what kind of lightning would you suggest for distance up to 300mm?

Thanks for the note which is easy to understand.

Damien.
