Prof. Saylan (1935-2009) passes away

Turkish Prof. Saylan died in a hospital in Istanbul early on Monday after a long battle with cancer.
Born in İstanbul in 1935, Saylan graduated from İstanbul University School of Medicine in 1963 and specialized in Venereal Diseases and Dermatology. She was appointed Associate Professor in 1972 and Professor in 1977 . Prof. Dr. Saylan concentrated her work on leprosy in 1976 and founded the Society for the Struggle Against Leprosy (SSAL) the same year. She also initiated the establishment of the Foundation for the Struggle Against Leprosy (FSAL) in 1976. She was also a founding member of the International Leprosy Union (ILU).
In 1989, Professor Saylan founded the The Association to Support Contemporary Life in İstanbul together with a group of colleagues and had been the president of the Association since its establishment. Since then it has provided grants to thousands of poor students, especially girls, and built schools in Turkey's impoverished regions. She was appointed a member of the Higher Education Council of Turkey, by the president, between the years 2001 and 2007.
Professor Saylan had numerous articles published both in English and in Turkish in the fields of medicine, education and problems of women. She had six books published in Turkey including her autobiographical book "The Sun Rises Now Out of Hope" and "Being a Doctor".

I pray her soul may rest in peace.
Leprosy(Hansen's disease) has been thought excessively terrible, and patients have been seen and treated very badly by severe and malicious prejudices in Japan, until recently.
maybe her works was very hard.

anyway, your card for Prof.Dr.Turkan Saylan is very sincere and graceful.
