I finally got my film back from the experimental shoot this weekend. I just bought a Mamiya m645 Medium Format Camera, and loaded it up with 120mm film, and took off on the motorcycles this weekend for a romp in the flowers. Now I have never used this camera before, so I was pretty baffled. But I kept my fingers crossed!! I'm VERY happy with the results. These are Bluebonnets, the state flower of Texas.

Monday I went to Houston Camera Exchange, dropped off two rolls, gave them my name, and walked out. When I walked in there yesterday afternoon, the guy behind the camera says across the store, "HEY, we were just talking about you!!"...so I looked around... I don't know these people, or the man standing at the counter with him. So when I walked up, the young man behind the counter had printed my pics, (on his nickle) and was showing other guy. He told me, "You know a lot of people walk in here, and I tell them, oh yes, you work is good...but he said YOURS is good!"... That was thrilling to me! The guy he was talking to also had the same camera, blah blah.

So I still am clueless about this camera, ANY help you can give me will be greatly appreciated! I need a cheat sheet! I just guessed at my Fstop, not knowing how sensitive the film was etc. Any rule of thumbs out there??? Help??
Thanks!
Linda

Hi Linda

Good use of a shallow dof, with superb color & sharpness on the bluebonnets. The yellow buds contrast nicely against the blue. Tfs!

HI Linda..good morning....this is a nice shot...I like the colors and the selective details..nice work.

Hi Linda,

Great result - as I like to say about myself: Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes - might apply here, huh? One suggestion, and not owning one of those cameras (yet!), would be to use your digital's automatic metering as a starting point. One f-stop smaller = 1 shutter speed slower I believe is the rule of thumb. Well, it has been a long time since I actually used a film camera, but that is where I would start as far as exposure.

Did they print those to a CD for you? I've read that is the way to go. Also, are you sure you had the lens stopped to f/16? It looks more like f/2.8 with the background and foreground so out of focus. Not that that is a bad thing, I really like the shallow depth of field here. What fun! I have a nice print for sale on eBay from Michel Delacroix, if I can get what I want out of that, then I will be looking at Mamiya 645 systems. I'm envious!

Have a fine day!

Foreground detail is very good, Linda.
I'm not very sure about the blurred line of horizon in the BG though.
Perhaps it could be cloned out.

Best regards, Daniel

Well this is different FILM...

I love the contrasting colors and focus.. You must keep us updated on what differences you see between film and digital in the final product!

Good morning Linda
I like the results which is unusual but quite pretty, blurred in foreground and background and two sharp flowers at each end.
I looked up your camera and you can still get an instruction book from the Mamiya site which might be useful to you.

Hi Linda. Nice shot of the blue bonnets and the photo looks fine. I do not know why all the flowers did not come out sharp with f/16 and 1/250 seconds. I used Fuji medium format camera and Fuji film ASA 100 since they give saturated colors and got great sharp results with lupines in our state. I love blue bonnets in spring in Texas.(Lady Bird Johnson bless her soul she did so much for the preservation of wildflowers and their promotion. Cheers.

hi linda,
a very nice image from this old camera.
there is a definite 'style' being produced by either the camera or the film.

i'm glad you posted a close up of these wonderful flowers.

kissy, kissy.

Bonjour Linda
Belle gestion de la DOF pour ces fleurs bleues et les petites touches de fleurs jaunes équilibrent bien cette image au niveau des couleurs.
Bonne journée

Hi Linda,
Wonderful macro photo of this beautiful plant, the lovely blue tones and the freash green together are so impressive. The depth of field you chose here is perfect, gives us a lovely focus for the main points and a nice blur in the back nad foregounds. Great tutorial shot, TFS!
Greetings,
Kristof

Hi Linda,
Wonderful light and amazing colors and contrast with marvellous details and DOF!

Hi Linda,

Amazing blue flowers! They are gorgeous. Glad you took this close up as it shows more details. I also like the sprinkling of yellow throughout too. Blue and yellow are such a clean, fresh, combination.

Hello Linda!

Lupine's beautiful flowers... splendid formulation, colours and light.
Fantastic effect.

I congratulate realization and I greet warmly.
Barbara

Ciao Linda, splendid focus on wonderful flower, great colors, your medio format camera works very well with you, great painting I like a lot my friend, ciao Silvio

Fantastic shot Linda - wow........ And f16 giving such a narrow DOF here, must be a function of the medium format and focal length at this film size.. Interesting to see more from this shoot but I really think that this is a top shot!!

Cheers
DAvid

Hey - nice play with the focus here - it really works well. The colors are so strong too!
Great!

Missed this one - I thought I had critiqued it before :)
I love the colours here. So bright and beautiful and very clear to see. The focus only hits a couple of the flowers - it must be hard to use the new /old camera. I think I'll stick to my digital...

Cheers
Janice
