Arctic Wolf (Canis lupus arctos)

Also known as a White Wolf.I was playing with my Tiffen polarizer, which deepens the blues of the sky.
The Arctic wolf is one of the most interesting animals living in the Arctic. The Arctic wolf is a subspecies of the Grey wolf (Canis lupus)that inhabited most of the Northern Hemisphere north of 15 degrees N latitude.
The Arctic wolf has mainly white fur year round, and they have slightly shorter snouts and ears than their Grey wolf cousins.
The Arctic wolf inhabits a region along the northern coast of North America ,north to the North pole and also along the Northern shores of Greenland.
Arctic wolves have been seen as far south as Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta.DNA studies have found the genes of Arctic Wolves as far south as Minnesota in the USA.
The wolves south of 70 degrees North latitude are Grey or black and most wolves north of this line are white. But basically a wolf is a wolf and they will interbreed and behave similarly.
In the high Arctic wolves have no fear of man, there they have been safe from pursuit by man and never been hunted so when encountering man, they stand and look. They have been known to be coaxed up close, but they are a rare sight in this vast region and one pack may cover an area 1000 km square.
This area is covered with ice and snow but some areas become snow free by mid-June to mid-August and enough low growing vegetation grows to feed musk-ox,caribou and Arctic hares. These animals are the chief food of the Arctic wolf.

This really is beautiful, Rob - both the animal and your capture. You've controlled the exposure perfectly, not easy with so much white in the scene. Composition is great - cannot find anything to fault here, it's lovely.

Hi Rob ,
This is a wonderfull animal . Never saw one before . The photo is very sharp you did a good use of your polorizer here . Good balance of the whites .
Daniel

I could probbaly take as good a picture as this but it would be at the cost of my life.

How are you people able to get so close to wild life? I so much a see a deer at the end of the field and deside to stop the car, it runs away.

See what i mean?

John

Stunning colours and contrast. Good detail and POF.

What a lovely and mighty subject, Rob! I like it. Very good timing and POV. Lovely details and focus.
