| JPEG or JPG | celina

It's now over a week and I'm still having problems uploading images - I keep getting the same old message 'JPEG only allowed@'
All my images are automatically saved on my harddrive photodisk as JPG - which I have always thought is one and the same as JPEG, but I wonder if my new computer is somehow the problem.
Can anyone please help me with any solutions. I've tried uploading again and again.
I'm just getting more frustrated with every attempt.
Regards

OK, so what is the kb size of the photo? Richt click properties. Exif data can add to 20kb to your photo when you use save as....
What is the length and width of the photo?
Is it an 8-bit photo? |

I once had this problem on a different site, where I had to use the "Save for Web and Devices" option in Photoshop to save the image prior to upload. Not sure if that will help you but might be worth a try.

I'll give this a try....although usually if I attempt an upload that is too big I'm told that it is too big. It's worth a try though.
Many thanks. |

Hi Miles,
I'll give this a go as well. Any suggestions are always helpful.

.jpeg and .jpg are both the same extention depending of the plateform you're using. Tho .jpg is the "most commontly used"
ex: name_of_photo.jpg
Wiki about .jpg
Use small extention as .jpg and not .JPG |

Thanks everyone for your advice but I'm still having problems uploading. I'm getting close to admitting defeat.
Any more suggestions are welcome.

| What software are you using to save the files as? |

I'm saving everything on Microsoft software and then any alterations are done using Adobe Photoshop.
Can I just ask if the size of images allowed has changed over the last year or so....could that be the problem?

Hi Niek,
Sorry I did mean to respond earlier.
My image size is 602kb (1421x1894). Do you think this makes a difference?

| I think you will find that the Trek sites will only accept images at a maximum size of 800 pixels across the longest side, and a maximum file size of 200kb. If you are trying to upload files that exceed this that could be your problem! |

The max file size is 300kb and since yours is more it is not accepted. Reduce the size to 300kb when you save for web or below 280kb when you save as... The latter is with EXIF data.

There's the issue! The greatest dimension of your image can only be 800px and the maximum file size is 300kb, get it within those limits and it should upload.

Hi Celina,
The size is a problem, of course. But there is another problem, recently mentionned in the forum of TE. Please, look at what Kath (feather) explained here:
http://www.trekearth.com/read.php?f=1&t=785976&m=1080274&tt=flat
I hope it will help you too.

LOL ... you mean that when I did upload images here I could have stuck in an extra 100kb of information ... sigh!

Open your image in any programme such as "photoshop" or other you may be using.
"Save as" a new image (don't use "save" this is important) use "save as"
Example: (original photo) name_of_photo.jpg save as name_of_photo2.jpg
Now you have a brand new copy, so whatever change you do on it such as size, won't alter the original.
Now we only work on "name_of_photo2.jpg
1-choose Image size then change make sure the height or width of the image don't exceed 800px
It could be 800px X 800px (square format)
or 800px X 500px
or 500px X 800px
as long the it's maximum width or height or both....don't exceed 800px
now you only need to use the level of compression, and make sure that
the total weight of your file don't exceed 300kb.
Ok Save.
You're done you're now ready to upload your resize image on Treklens. |

If you want to upload a "workshop" or you're doing a "re-post"
Maximum width and height is 800px
Maximum file weight is now 200kb and not 300kb reserve for the original
upload of your photo. |

Hello Celina,
Here you have what Kath (feather) wrote about something similar:
"Have you recently installed Nikon's software Capture NX? I had the same problem some time ago. I don't remember the exact details but at some point in the installation process you are invited to tick which formats you want associated wwith the program. If you tick jpeg all your jpeg files are tagged and TE somehow won't recognise them. The only way I got it working again was to to uninstall Capture NX and do a system restore back to the date before I installed the program. When re-installing be sure to only tick NEF files for association.
Hope this helps
Kath"
Have a nice week.

Hi,
Many thanks for your patience! I do wonder if changing the software is the problem as I was using Corel Draw before. I'll try switching to the corel Draw and see if this makes a difference.
Cheers

Hi Rew,
I've been given several suggestions and will try each one. One of them has got to be right, but size should make a difference as well, especially if the image has been post processed too.
Many thanks,
